SiteVision Goes To NCDevCon – Daria Norris Will Present

ncdevcon-logoSiteVision developers are headed out to the popular NC Developers Conference, September 13-14 in Raleigh North Carolina where Daria Norris, our Lead Technical Architect, will present two sessions. Norris, an 18-year ColdFusion veteran, has been a frequent presenter on the ColdFusion development circuit over the past several years including presentations for NCDevCon, and cf.Objective().

The event, North Carolina’s premier web and mobile conference, focuses on HTML5, Mobile, JavaScript, ColdFusion and CSS technologies with contributors from across the globe. This year’s slogan “Feed Your Brain,” emphasizes the importance of learning current technology in enterprise level development.   Attendees will participate in two days of timely and important web, mobile development, and networking sessions at the Centennial Campus, NC State University.

Daria_150-sqNorris’s first session: “Simplify Your Workload, Not Your Delivery,” discusses how to make the transition from procedural programming to object oriented design concepts. She’ll cover how Framework One (FW/1) helps simplify the process while keeping code readable and logical.  She will also review the best practices to organize code around MVC and a service architecture that turns complicated code into easy-to-learn conventions. The goal is to simplify workloads while still delivering complex systems with all the bells and whistles.  You can read more here:

In her second presentation, “Better Living through Version Control,” attendees will learn how version control can improve their development cycle and make life easier. Norris will  go over the version control buzz words like branching, forking, merging and reverting, as well as how centralized and distributed version control differ from each other. You can read more here:

Last year’s conference attendees were really enthusiastic:  Here’s just one example:  “The number of sessions and quality of speakers you had was amazing. Videotaping the sessions was brilliant, so I can see other sessions I was not able to attend.”

We’ll be there for the whole conference. Hope to see you at the networking event, Saturday Night!

SiteVision To Add Recycling Interface For CVWMA Petersburg Residents

CVWMARoanoke, VA March 16, 2013: In an innovative move some years ago, the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) added an online support system for its customers in the Central Virginia area.  The original system allowed CVWMA to manage all customer curbside requests for central VA.  The system included the ability for customers to ask online about bin deliveries, missed pickups, info requests, email notification of scheduled pickups, recycling requests, reports, and the like.

More recently CVWMA added an E-Commerce Option so that customers can order and pay for their curbside carts online. In the new enhancement, Petersburg, VA residents will have a new recycling vendor interface.

The new interface by SiteVision will log calls and process users to the new, approved recycling vendor for that jurisdiction. The project includes database enhancements, email reminder forms, associated Q&A and testing, and deployment to production and backup servers.

The online ordering system includes a search function which permits users to find their specific address.  They are then presented with a screen that includes their address, a pop-up collection schedule for their area, an option to request an email reminder the day before pick-ups, a recycling bin request and the ability to order a regular 96-gallon curbside cart. The user then proceeds through the secure, online ordering and payment process. Upon successful completion of their purchase, customers receive an Order Confirmation page which can be printed, as well as an email receipt. The cart is then delivered within two to three weeks.

The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) is a public service authority that coordinates recycling and solid waste management programs with thirteen local governments in central Virginia. Since its formation in 1990, the CVWMA has provided economical waste management and recycling solutions for reach of its member jurisdictions. The service celebrated its 20th year of service in December of 2010.  A board of directors including representatives from each member locality governs the actions of the Authority and daily operations are coordinated by an experienced staff.

More Java Breaches, Fixes, New Phone Tablet . . .

[image source_type=”attachment_id” source_value=”4776″ align=”left” size=”Small 150 width” quality=”100″] Java Problems Ongoing.  Are You At Risk?

As we outlined last month, the serious flaws in Oracle’s Java7 were enough to set the industry abuzz with criticism.  Since our last newsletter remaining flaws in Java7 permitted attacks on Facebook and Apple, though the companies claimed no customer or user data was compromised.  Twitter warned that about 250,000 user accounts were compromised.

In essence if you are running an outdated version of Java you are at risk.  Oracle has scrambled to provide fixes.  The most recent came in early February and contained some 50 security fixes; then another February 19 with several additional fixes. According to PC World, the latest update, Java 7 (Update 15) and Java 6 (Update 41), address five additional vulnerabilities that couldn’t be included in the emergency Java update that Oracle released on Feb. 1 due to time constraints.

For the average user who may be confused, uninitiated and wary, geek.com has provided a handy guide for disabling Java in your browsers.  It should be noted that all browsers as well as Windows, OS-X, and Linux operating systems are vulnerable.

Furthermore, according to Information Week mobile developer sites were targeted in the recent attacks, so if you are a mobile developer and feel you’ve been compromised, it’s critical that you check your source code. We’ve included some helpful links if you want to further explore the issue:  Information Week, geek.com, PC World, Oracle Java topics, Oracle downloads

ASUS FonepadHello!  A Tablet That Can Call Home.

The Asus Fonepad is what many of us have been waiting for:  A tablet that’s a phone that’s a tablet.  Who wants to carry a slew of devices around to talk, type, hype and chat?  In short Fonepad is a 7″ Android tablet that features 3G data and voice capabilities.

But, is it really the bomb?  Do you really want to hold a 7” tablet up to your ear?  For some, perhaps, who rely on speakerphone, no big deal?  For others, probably, no way!  As one reviewer put it:  who wants to hold something up to your ear that blocks out the sun?

On the other hand the Fonepad is expected to be relatively inexpensive (about $250 US), resembles the Nexus 7 in many respects, and adds a phone into the mix.  So use the phone or not, it’s there at a very decent price.  Asus hasn’t  yet given a US release date, so for the moment we can wait and see how it’s received in the UK and Asia.

Do Operating Systems Matter Anymore?

While they certainly will matter on the back end — to the average user, the operating system is becoming less and less important.

Why?  For starters, a proliferation of device sizes, shapes, capabilities and operating systems are now in direct competition with the traditional PC model.  Furthermore, Software As A Service (SAAS) is dynamically affecting how we receive and use applications for business and pleasure.

As a business owner, I might utilize several servers, a cloud-delivered custom customer relations management system, and a proprietary accounting system; permit a BYOD environment for certain employees, and use, say, Google Docs or Windows for my daily word processing and spreadsheet applications.

It hasn’t been so long ago that the Microsoft OS had us pretty locked into a rigid my way or the highway mentality. Surely you remember the blue screen of death.  Surely you remember that your primary OS choices were Windows or Apple.  Application delivery is a fast shifting paradigm, and it will be fascinating to see how it coalesces, or, indeed, if it does; and whether it even matters. SiteVision Chosen to Enhance The Georgia Hospital Association’s Georgia 911 Web Portal

[image source_type=”attachment_id” source_value=”4633″ align=”left” size=”small” quality=”100″] Roanoke, VA December 6, 2012:  The Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) has chosen SiteVision to develop a specialized nursing home module for the Association’s Emergency Preparedness Program – GHA911. The online website portal is a web browser-based application created to enhance the distribution of critical emergency management information needed by Georgia hospital and healthcare providers, as well as other local and state agencies.

GHA is a non-profit trade association whose mission is to promote the health and welfare of the public through the development of better hospital care for Georgia’s citizens.  The Georgia911 website provides a hub for vital news, information, tools and diversion status for Georgia hospitals and EMS organizations.  SiteVision was earlier chosen to implement a Crisis Care Module. The new module will modify the existing GHA911 application to handle the needs of Nursing Homes.

As threats to human health and national health security are always present, whether by natural, unintentional or intentional means, such threats can rapidly overwhelm public health and healthcare systems.  Under the guidance of US department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and its Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) GHA focuses on preparedness planning and response to strengthen the capabilities of Georgia hospitals and health care systems in public health emergencies and medical disasters. The GHA911 hub is critical to this mission.

The new effort is designed to bring Long-term care and nursing homes into the Georgia 911 portal; thereby, further enhancing the healthcare coalitions between Georgia’s state and local entities and between various public and private health care institutions.

Specifically SiteVision will modify the existing GHA911 application to include Nursing Homes and Nursing Home Management Organizations (NHMO’s) with custom member home pages, navigation specific to nursing homes, and new data points specific to nursing homes such as contact information and key personnel.  New administration features will help manage organization approvals, bed counts, and special needs. Included are Training videos and help documentation. A variety of other enhancements include the ability to update ad hoc and Council Coordinator reports.
